1992 Toyota 4Runner 4WD manual for only $2000. Has around 200k miles though. Are these as bulletproof as I've heard before? !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

It depends on the engine. Toyota only made a few bad engines in their time, and the 3VZ-E that was used in the 4Runner from 1988 to 1995. If you see a SOHC head, you don't want it.

I edited my post. I thought that was a 95+ model, but it's just a '92 facelift model.

All I can tell you is that I've got a friend who has one with 300k miles, all his own. I'd buy the truck from him if he were selling. He's always done every bit of scheduled maintenance, though.

Ill ask the guy for a pic of the engine still to see if its a good V6 or a bad V6

As far as I'm concerned any generation of 4Runner is insanely reliable. Like 400k without issue reliable.

I actually looked at - and still want - one of this generation and the one that succeeded it. Tempting, but ze German sports sedans won out, which my SUV and reliability loving self might regret in the future.

Very cool SUV to have that won't make you go broke and heartbroken like ze Volvo. It's the best looking generation as well (IMO) Though I do believe these are considered slow . Not dangerously slow, but not near "catch you hair on fire" quick either. But hey, my GMC did 60 in 14 seconds and it never seemed too bad.

No one needs fast in an SUV. People think they do, but they don't.

As Ken pointed out, my idea of what a bad engine is is probably a little stilted. Even with the SOHC engine, you'll really be most likely to replace the occasional head gasket or have to keep your eye on your oil level since it's probably going through the front main seal as fast as it's going through the oil pump. It's not like an American bad engine or a Volvo.

Trust me, I agree. There's no reason an SUV needs to be breaking 8-9 seconds to 60 really, though it is cool that modern ones are breaking 6 seconds just because why the hell not. Like I said, my Safari did it in 14 and I never felt like it was dangerously slow or anything.

As an owner of one of these, with the 3VZE, it isn't a bad engine. It's underpowered and likes head gaskets, but chances are at 200k miles, this has new gaskets. They are fun to beat around in, and the manual helps a lot with the slowness. If you want to start playing around on some trails, get it. In the 3 years I've had mine, it's spent less than two weeks in the shop. It is super dependable, and with the exception of head gaskets, there really isn't much to go wrong.

The manual ones actually could do it in 10-11, but the automatics(mine) take 14-17.

Plus, at 200k miles it's already been done, probably. As long as it has been done right, it shouldn't do it again. I haven't had any other issues with mine in three years.

I really want to learn manual still and would love to have a bit of fun on the small trails by me.

Any way of telling easily if the head gaskets are fucked?

It smokes a lot, the oil will have coolant in it, chances are it will definitely sound off, etc. When mine went, it was more my fault than anything. Just as a precaution, I would change the water pump, timing belt, thermostat, and a coolant flush with those miles. Really just preventive maintenance. Plus, the back window would make something more plagued than Vickie worth it. It's like a convertible with none of the sunburn. Also, it has a tailgate and the seats fold flat :)

You don't want a 3.0. I had a '92 3.0 for awhile, which I only bought with that engine because my buddy's shop had just rebuilt the whole thing. Still a dog.

This is a great truck, super reliable but under powered. I had a 91 manual V6 and the only issue is that engine likes to leak some oil and it eats head gaskets. Mine had 162K miles on it and it went through two sets of head gaskets in that time which is expensive if you don't do it yourself.
